Alberta Legislature at Night | Night Portrait Photography
The Alberta Legislature at Night during Christmas is simply beautiful. The grounds are lit up by thousands of coloured Christmas lights and it’s the perfect backdrop for some colourful holiday photos. SUper Festive! Kate & Pat joined us (my darling husband Derek was helping me that night and we live broadcasted part of this session on Periscope! How fun!) for a frosty night portrait session. We picked a Monday night to shoot thinking it would be pretty quiet but the grounds were still packed with people so it was tricky getting good backgrounds without people in the way 🙂 The central fountain had a great display and was a super pretty backdrop as well as the legislature building itself. We played a little with having sparklers burn as well for fun to end the session! These are a few of my favourite photos from Kate & Pat’s couples session at the Alberta Legislature at Night!
My lighting set up for these portraits consisted of four 216 pin LED video lights at roughly 35 degrees to each side of me with two lights on each lightstand and I had one off-camera flash behind the couple for rim light triggered by a pocketwizard. It was a pretty lightweight set up and relatively easy to move around to try different locations. The video lights being off to the side of camera made it much easier for the couple to look at the camera than when I had a video light mounted directly on camera. Most of these were shot at ISO 640, ISO800 or ISO1000 between f1.6 and f2.2 with shutter speeds between 1/80sec and 1/100sec.
